Job description

 

BCNatal | Fetal Medicine Research Center is conducting a research line on fetal surgery involving the development of an artificial placenta experimental setting, which involves animal experimentation. We are looking for 2 enthusiastic and methodical life sciences graduates to work as Artificial Placenta Monitoring Specialists in a multidisciplinary research project.

BCNatal | Fetal Medicine Research Center, directed by Prof. Eduard Gratacós, is a multidisciplinary research centre in fetal and perinatal medicine, with a consolidated track record in fetal medicine and surgery research and a long-standing experience in large multidisciplinary projects. Accredited by the Spanish government as an excellence research centre, it works to find solutions to diseases of prenatal origin.

BCNatal-FMRC is the research center of BCNatal, a large clinical centre integrating the Departments of Maternal-fetal Medicine and Neonatology from two large tertiary University Hospitals, the SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital and Hospital Clinic Barcelona. The research and clinical center provide a privileged environment for clinically applicable and translational research.

 

Main purpose of the job

  • Animal well-being control and intensive care monitoring
  • Medication administration
  • Biological sample collection and processing
  • Experimental data collection

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Study and follow established protocols (SOPs)
  • Monitor animals and experimental setting
  • Collect experimental data at the indicated times
  • Biological sample extraction, collection, processing, and storage
  • Perform necropsies
  • Prepare and administer medications
  • Keep accurate records of relevant events occurred during the shift and actions taken
  • Assist in maintaining an appropriate inventory
  • Preparation and clean up of spaces before, during and after the experiments
  • Ensure prompt and efficient response to queries (daily trouble shooting), acknowledging all communication, and ensuring efficient flow of information
  • Comply with the 4Rs (reduction, reuse, recycling, and recovery) and ethics involving animals in research
  • Perform other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job description as requested by the Senior Coordinators, Project Manager, Principal Investigator, Scientific Manager, or the Chief Investigator. This job description reflects the present requirements of the post, and as duties and responsibilities change/develop, the job description will be reviewed and be subject to amendment in consultation with the post holder. The appointee will be expected to carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

 

We offer

  • Part time, 35h/week
  • 12h monitoring shifts (mainly night shifts) rotating from Friday to Sunday
  • Salary range 22K – 25K (gross amount 35h/week), depending on candidate experience
  • Starting date: February-March 2024

 

 

Requirements

Qualifications, experience and knowledge:

 

  • Life sciences degree (veterinary medicine, biology, biomedicine, biotechnology or similar). Senior laboratory technicians with large animal experimentation experience will be also considered.
  • Certification to work with experimental animals functions B-C (Generalitat de Catalunya or equivalent European Institution). Candidates holding Animal experimentation course without species limitation will be also considered. Certificate upload is required.
  • At least 2 years of animal experimentation experience
  • Animal monitoring experience will be positively valued.
  • Sample processing experience for posterior biochemical, molecular and histological analysis
  • Tissue collection/Necropsy experience

  • Candidates should be research-inclined and have a pro-active personality
