Job description

Postdoctoral researcher on treatment decision-making in situations of therapeutic uncertainty; project SALVOVAR “A European multi-disciplinary clinical project meant to improve the management of patients with poor prognostic ovarian cancer after neoadjuvant chemotherapy: restoring hope, salvaging lives”

The candidate will join Health Technology Assessment in Primary Care and Mental Health (PRISMA) Research group (https://www.irsjd.org/en/research/36/health-technology-assessment-in-pri...).

The PRISMA research lines focus on design and assessment of health interventions, and health economics. We conduct research on preventive strategies, medication use and adherence, shared decision-making, and health behaviour interventions in diseases of high prevalence and high social impact, such as mental health conditions, cancer, and cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.

The PRISMA group has research expertise in several methodological areas such as real-world data analysis, economic evaluation and qualitative and mixed-methods research in health services.

The candidate will join the project “SALVOVAR”, a 5-year project conducted by a consortium of 12 partners from 3 European countries led by the Hospices Civils de Lyon, France, an expert center in gynaecological oncology.

At the core of SALVOVAR is a large European multi-center phase III pragmatic trial in ovarian cancer with poor prognostic, characterized by poor chemosensitivity and non-resectable disease after a first course of chemotherapy.

The study will assess the utility, acceptability, and affordability of adjusting medical-and-surgical treatment by chemotherapy densification and will be performed in 6 countries in centers affiliated to the ENGOT network (https://engot.esgo.org/) and sponsored by the ARCAGY-GINECO group (https://www.arcagy.org/).

In the SALVOVAR trial, additional treatments will be proposed to patients according to local standard practice including surgical cytoreduction and medical maintenance therapy (bevacizumab and/or PARP inhibitors). Given the lack of clear research evidence on their benefit-risk balance in this patient group, decisions regarding these treatments are currently made under therapeutic uncertainty, which represents a challenge for both clinicians and patients.

SALVOVAR offers the opportunity to generate valuable evidence on how decisions are taken and how shared decision-making can be improved in such situations.

The PRISMA group is responsible for studying determinants of treatment decision making and developing tools to assess and integrate patient and clinician perspectives in the decision process. A conceptual model will be developed based on literature review and stakeholder input, and quantitative and qualitative methods will be used to collect data in multiple centers to test and improve the model and translate it into practical tools to implement in clinical settings.

The postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for conducting the research on treatment decision making, in close collaboration with senior researchers and clinicians from FSJD and HCL. They will lead on the development of the research protocols and coordinate and support the data collection in participating centers, in close collaboration with the ARCAGY-GINECO group. Moreover, they will lead the analysis of the data collected, and publication of results to scientific audiences and the general public.

The postdoctoral researcher will also contribute to other projects within the PRISMA group depending on their area of expertise and interests, to supervision of junior team members, and to the development of there search lines active within the group.
