Laboratory technician with animal experimentation experience

BCNatal | Fetal Medicine Research Center is conducting a new ambitious research project on fetal surgery and therapy to develop an artificial placenta, which involves animal experimentation. We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to work as a laboratory technician with animal experimentation experience in this new multidisciplinary project.

Context

BCNatal | Fetal Medicine Research Center, directed by Prof. Eduard Gratacós, is a multidisciplinary research centre in fetal and perinatal medicine, recognised as one of the Accredited by the Spanish government as an excellence research centre, it works to find solutions to diseases of prenatal origin. The centre is ranked among the top international research groups in maternal-fetal medicine.

BCNatal-FMRC is the research branch of the BCNatal clinical centre, providing a privileged environment for clinically applicable and translational research.

Conditions

  • Full-time position
  • Salary range 17K – 20K, depending on experience
  • Duration: Initial term of one year, renewable thereafter for further fixed-term periods until the end of the project (4-month probationary period).
  • Starting date: October-November 2021

Main purpose of the job

  • Surgery assistance: prepare operating room for surgery and assist surgeons in experimental procedures
  • Monitor and control animal well-being
  • Collect and entry experimental data in data bases
  • Collect and process biological samples
  • Biobank management of biological samples
  • Organization of laboratory: reagent preparation, inventories, and material purchases

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Learn and follow established protocols (SOPs)
  • Prepare material, reagents, and medication for surgical procedures
  • Assist during experiments
  • Monitor animals and experimental setting
  • Collect experimental data at the indicated times
  • Collect, process, and properly store biological samples. Histology tissue processing experience will be valued
  • Maintain sample biobank updated
  • Keep accurate records and document actions taken
  • Entry of experimental data into the project databases. Experience working with databases will be valued
  • Keep laboratory reagents and supplies in stock
  • Place laboratory orders
  • Receive and store laboratory supplies
  • Manage laboratory inventories (supplies, medications, and samples). Office intermediate to advanced users will be valued
  • Maintain and safely operate laboratory equipment
  • Maintain lab clean and an orderly condition, using aseptic techniques
  • Ensure prompt and efficient response to queries (daily trouble shooting), acknowledging all communication, and ensuring efficient flow of information
  • Comply with the 4Rs (reduction, reuse, recycling and recovery) and ethics involving animals in research
  • Perform other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job description as requested by the Senior Coordinators, Project Manager, Principal Investigator, Scientific Manager or the Chief Investigator. This job description reflects the present requirements of the post, and as duties and responsibilities change/develop, the job description will be reviewed and be subject to amendment in consultation with the post holder. The appointee will be expected to carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

Requirements

Key Profile Requirements:

The successful candidate should hold a laboratory technician FP qualification. Degree related with biomedical sciences (biology, biomedicine, biotechnology, bioengineering or veterinary) will be a plus. Candidates should be research-inclined and have a pro-active personality with good organizational skills. Certification to work with experimental animals will be positively valued as well as any previous animal monitoring experience. Openness to learn and adaptability will be highly valued.
