Job description

 

BCNatal | Fetal Medicine Research Center is conducting a research line on fetal surgery involving the development of an artificial placenta experimental setting. Research activities involve animal experimentation.

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to work as a veterinarian participating as anesthetist during the procedures and monitoring animals in an ICU-like setting.

 

Context

BCNatal | Fetal Medicine Research Center, directed by Prof. Eduard Gratacós, is a multidisciplinary research centre in fetal and perinatal medicine, with a consolidated track record in fetal medicine and surgery research and a long-standing experience in large multidisciplinary projects. Accredited by the Spanish government as an excellence research centre, it works to find solutions to diseases of prenatal origin.

BCNatal-FMRC is the research center of BCNatal, a large clinical centre integrating the Departments of Maternal-fetal Medicine and Neonatology from two large tertiary University Hospitals, the SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital and Hospital Clinic Barcelona. The research and clinical center provide a privileged environment for clinically applicable and translational research.

 

Main purpose of the job

  • Anesthesia assistance during surgical procedures
  • Animal well-being control and intensive care monitoring
  • Experimental data collection
  • Medication administration
  • Biological sample collection and processing
  • Animal orders

 

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Follow established protocols (SOPs)
  • Monitor animals and experimental setting (monitoring turns include morning, afternoon shifts, and night shifts)
  • Collect experimental data at the indicated times
  • Biological sample extraction, collection and processing.
  • Prepare and administer medications
  • Keep accurate records of relevant events occurred during the shift and actions taken
  • Assist with animal programing for experiments: coordinate project needs, farm animal availability and animal facility services and spaces.
  • Assist in maintaining an appropriate inventory
  • Ensure prompt and efficient response to queries (daily trouble shooting), acknowledging all communication, and ensuring efficient flow of information
  • Comply with the 4Rs (reduction, reuse, recycling and recovery) and ethics involving animals in research
  • Perform other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job description as requested by the Senior Coordinators, Project Manager, Principal Investigator, Scientific Manager or the Chief Investigator. This job description reflects the present requirements of the post, and as duties and responsibilities change/develop, the job description will be reviewed and be subject to amendment in consultation with the post holder. The appointee will be expected to carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

 

Conditions

  • Full-time position, monitoring shits will rotate from mornings, afternoons or night on weekdays and weekends. Shifts out of regular hours will be compensated following standard compensation (+25%).
  • Salary range 22K – 26K (gross amount full-time), depending on experience
  • Starting date: March-May or September 2023

Requirements

Key Profile Requirements:

 

  • The successful candidate should hold a Veterinary degree (or last year student) with certification to work with experimental animals functions B-C (Generalitat de Catalunya or equivalent European Institution).
  • Previous animal anesthesia and ICU monitoring experience will be positively valued.
  • Candidates should be research-inclined and have a pro-active personality with good organizational skills.
  • Openness to learn and adaptability will be highly valued for this position.
