Job description

 

BCNatal | Fetal Medicine Research Center is conducting a research line on fetal surgery involving the development of an artificial placenta experimental setting, which involves animal experimentation. We are looking for a resourceful and enthusiastic individual to fill a postdoctoral position in a fetal medicine applied multidisciplinary research project.

Context:
BCNatal | Fetal Medicine Research Center, directed by Prof. Eduard Gratacós, is a multidisciplinary research centre in fetal and perinatal medicine, with a consolidated track record in fetal medicine and surgery research and a long-standing experience in large multidisciplinary projects. Accredited by the Spanish government as an excellence research centre, it works to find solutions to diseases of prenatal origin.

BCNatal-FMRC is the research center of BCNatal, a large clinical center integrating the Departments of Maternal-fetal Medicine and Neonatology from two large tertiary University Hospitals, the SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital and Hospital Clinic Barcelona. The research and clinical center provide a privileged environment for clinically applicable and translational research.

Main purpose of the job:
• Oversight the correct processing and storage of the biobank of the project.
• Propose methods and approaches for tissue and biological sample analysis to address the needs of the project as defined by scientific direction, involving the assessment of fetal development and tissue injury, among others

 

Main duties and responsibilities:
• Generate, analyse, and present biological samples and associated data
• Manage the project biobank.
• Fill and retrieve data from project data bases
• Attend and organize laboratory tasks according to project needs
• Generate and present data reports
• Maintain updated and accurate records of laboratory work and results
• Find and set up new laboratory techniques to answer project needs
• Write laboratory protocols (SOPs)
• Train laboratory technicians in SOPs and follow its correct implementation.
• Participate in biological sample collection (necropsies), processing and analysis
• Maintain project biobank sample inventory
• Participate in surgical procedures (eventually, if required)
• Monitor animals and experimental setting (eventually, if required)
• Ensure prompt and efficient response to queries (daily trouble shooting), acknowledging all communication, and ensuring efficient flow of information
• Comply with the 4Rs (reduction, reuse, recycling and recovery) and ethics involving animals in research
• Perform other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job description as requested by the Senior Coordinators, Project Manager, Principal Investigator, Scientific Manager, or the Chief Investigator. This job description reflects the present requirements of the post, and as duties and responsibilities change/develop, the job description will be reviewed and be subject to amendment in consultation with the post holder. The appointee will be expected to carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

Requirements

Key Profile Requirements:
• The successful candidate should hold a PhD in life sciences (Biomedicine, Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry or related)
• Effective written and oral communication skills in English and Spanish (desirable).
• Ability to undertake independent research.

• Hands-on experience with analytical skills such as RT-PCR, Elisa, WB, Immunostaining and microscopy techniques.
• Certification to work with experimental animals functions B-C (Generalitat de Catalunya or equivalent European Institution) (desired)
